The 2023 report also demonstrates other significant investments cruise lines are making to reduce emissions at berth and at sea, such as shoreside electricity, which allows cruise ships to switch off engines for significant emissions reduction while in port. The CLIA community includes ocean, river, and specialty cruise lines; a widespread network of stakeholders, including ports and destinations, ship development, suppliers, and business services; and certified travel agent members. The organization’s global headquarters are in Washington, DC, with regional offices located in North and South America, Europe, and Australasia.

Duffy’s tenure also includes several major milestones in the company’s history, including the year-long celebration of its 50th birthday in 2022 and the moment it welcomed its 100 millionth guest on board in 2023. For the first time, the OE Environmental Report also addresses the challenge posed by the need for new, alternative fuels and the steps the industry is taking to support progress. Specifically, in addition to LNG, over three-quarters of the global cruise fleet by passenger capacity is now equipped to use alternative fuels. CLIA gives the award to a member agency that has demonstrated innovative and visionary leadership in their approach to promoting cruise travel, growing their cruise travel sales and supporting their affiliated travel advisors.

Business Technology
The 2023 order book data shows that cruise lines continue investment in new vessels with 44 new ships on order during the next five years, representing an investment of $62 billion since 2019. Of these new ships, 25 will be LNG- powered and seven will be either methanol ready on delivery, or methanol capable, representing an investment in new engine technologies that will accelerate the maritime transition towards a future of low to zero carbon fuels. “Already today cruise lines are building the ships of the future which will run on new, more sustainable engine technologies. The introduction of these new technologies and the many pilot programs and trials in place reveal how the cruise industry is an innovator and early adopter of technologies that are helping us sail to a more sustainable future,” Craighead continued.
State of the Cruise Industry report
Michael Akana, a travel advisor based in Half Moon Bay, California, was named this year's Elite Cruise Counsellor of the Year. The honor is given to an individual CLIA member who has earned Elite Cruise Counsellor or Elite Cruise Counsellor Scholar status—the highest level of certification offered by CLIA. They must also have met sales requirements and made a contribution to the travel agent landscape. This year, CLIA forecasts that the number of cruise ship passengers will reach 31.5 million, surpassing 2019 levels.
A CLIA cruise travel agent can help you select the cruise that best fits your vacation schedule, preference and budget. CLIA travel agents have completed extensive training programs, including sailing on and inspecting a vast number of cruise ships across many different lines. With thousands of CLIA travel agents in the United States and Canada, there’s sure to be one nearby. Several cruise ships are using liquefied natural gas (LNG) as the cruise industry prepares for a future powered by sustainable, renewable energy sources. Ships built with LNG engines and fuel supply systems can switch to bio or synthetic LNG in the future with minimal or no modifications.

Travel advisors remain critical to the cruise industry, with 73 percent of cruisers reporting that travel advisors have a meaningful influence on their decision to cruise. In the next five years, 15% of new build cruise ships entering service are anticipated to be equipped with battery storage and/or fuel cells to allow for hybrid power generation. Several CLIA member lines are using or testing the ability to run on renewable fuels, such as biofuels and synthetic carbon fuels, on new build ships. All CLIA new build ships are specified for advanced wastewater treatment systems which will bring the total to 242 ships, representing 80% of the fleet and 84% of global capacity. In addition, cruise lines are pursuing fuel flexibility, investing today in propulsion technologies with conversion capabilities for the future—with 32 pilot projects and collaborative initiatives underway with sustainable fuel producers and engine companies. Steering the flagship brand of Miami-based Carnival Corp., and the world’s most popular cruise line, Duffy leads more than 48,000 Carnival Cruise Line team members who deliver fun and memorable cruises to more than 5.5 million guests each year.
An annual survey revealed that global cruise tourism was forecasted to surpass pre-pandemic totals this year, with the industry growing by almost 20 percent by 2028. More cruise lines are diversifying energy solutions by incorporating multi-fuel engines, trialing fuel cell technology, wind (including solid sail) technology, as well as photovoltaic solutions and battery storage for power shaving. Global travel industry champion and Carnival Cruise Line President Christine Duffy’s significant contributions to cruise travel are being recognized with the Cruise Lines International Association’s Lifetime Achievement Award for 2024. Duffy was honored at the 2024 CLIA Hall of Fame Cruise Industry Awards, where she was inducted into CLIA’s Hall of Fame and introduced by Josh Weinstein, president, chief executive officer and chief climate officer of Carnival Corporation & plc. Today, Cruise Lines International Association (CLIA), the leading voice of the global cruise community, has released its annual State of the Cruise...
Shoreside electricity will reduce carbon emissions in port
CLIA expects the economic impact will be even greater in 2023, because of the uptick in passengers. Since 2019, the number of ships with advanced wastewater treatment systems capable of meeting the more stringent standards of the Baltic Sea Special Area has increased by 167%. Sixty percent of CLIA-member ships—171 in total—currently use efficiency tracking systems, with many more systems planned for the future. North America remains the most significant source market, but the industry as a whole has seen a major upswing, with the Mediterranean seeing a massive increase and the Caribbean remaining the top destination for cruise passengers.

Liquified Natural Gas (LNG) Fuel – As the cruise industry anticipates the transition to a future of sustainable, renewable fuels, several cruise ships are utilizing liquified natural gas (LNG). Ships designed with LNG engines and fuel supply systems are able to switch to bio or synthetic LNG in the future, with little or no modifications. During the next five years, an increasing number of cruise ships sailing and launching will either use alternative fuels or will be able to include zero-carbon fuels when they become available.
Our own member cruise line websites also provide a great source for rigorous, layered protective measures. Based on analyses by SeaLNG and others, LNG is the fossil fuel currently available at scale that has the best performance in reducing atmospheric emissions. LNG has virtually zero sulfur emissions and particulate emissions, reduces NOx emissions by approximately 85%, and achieves up to a 20% reduction in greenhouse gas emissions. Cruise Lines International Association (CLIA) has released its 2023 Global Cruise Industry Environmental Technologies and Practices Report, demonstrating the sector’s tangible progress in advancing its environmental and sustainability objectives.
Data found that global capacity is predicted to grow by 19 percent to more than 746,000 berths from 2022 to 2028. Research also showed that 85 percent of those that have cruised will sail again, six percent higher than pre-pandemic totals. This includes being appointed by the Secretary of Commerce to the United States Travel and Tourism Advisory Board and serving as Chair of the U.S. In 2022, the cruise industry generated $138 billion to the global economy, 1.2 million jobs and $43 billion in wages.
